【詩和訳】ハリール・ジブラーン『狂人』より「天文学者」
今年最後の更新っす。ハリール・ジブラーンのThe Madmanをひたすら訳してくシリーズですが、今回はThe Astronomerという小品を和訳してみました。テクストはおなじみProject Gutenberg Australia*1です。大切なものは、全部自分の中にあるという、ありきたりだけど、とても大事なことを伝えてくれます。
The Astronomer
In the shadow of the temple my friend and I saw a blind man sitting alone. And my friend said, “Behold the wisest man of our land.”
Then I left my friend and approached the blind man and greeted him. And we conversed.
After a while I said, “Forgive my question; but since when has thou been blind?”
“From my birth,” he answered.
Said I, “And what path of wisdom followest thou?”
Said he, “I am an astronomer.”
Then he placed his hand upon his breast saying, “I watch all these suns and moons and stars.”
友人とわたしは、神殿の傍に盲人が独り座っているのを見かけた。友人は言った。「御覧、この地で一番の賢者だよ」
それでわたしは友人と別れ、その盲人のところへ行って、彼に挨拶をした。そしてわたしたちは言葉を交わした。
しばらくして、わたしは言った。「質問を御許し下さい。いつから盲いておいでなのですか？」
「生まれたときからだよ」と彼は答えた。
わたしは言った。「では、どのような道を通して叡知を獲得されたのですか？」
彼は言った。「俺は天文学者なんだ」
そして彼は手を胸に置き、こう言った。「この太陽と月と星、すべてを観測してるのさ」
